[AINews] OpenAI GPT-next disproves 80 year old Erdős planar unit distance problem for under $1000

OpenAI announced that its internal model successfully disproved a long-standing belief regarding the planar unit distance problem, a famous issue from 1946. This general-purpose model demonstrated new capabilities in discrete geometry, rather than being a domain-specific tool. The achievement received strong validation from mathematicians, with Timothy Gowers calling it the first clear example of AI solving a well-known open math problem. OpenAI researcher Hongxun Wu noted this milestone as significant for the model's ability to tackle the hardest problems in mathematics.
