3 Questions to Ask Before Adopting Any AI Tool

Most organizations adopt AI tools based on hype, not value. Three questions surface the difference before you sign the contract.

> "A tool that cannot answer 'why now?' does not deserve your budget."

In every board meeting this year, the question comes up: "Do we have an AI strategy?" The correct answer is not "Yes, we bought ChatGPT licenses for the team." Strategy is something else entirely.

Before adopting any AI tool — whether a chat platform, an autonomous agent, or a custom model — ask these three questions:

1. What problem are you solving, exactly?

Not "we want to be innovative." Not "our competitors use it." The real problem: a specific process that wastes hours, a decision lacking data, or rare expertise the team doesn't have. If you cannot describe the problem in one measurable sentence, the issue is clarity, not AI.

2. Where does your data go after every use?

Every prompt, every attached file, every response — has a trajectory. Is it stored? For how long? Is it used to train the vendor's models? Who has access? These are not just legal questions — they are competitive questions. Your contract should answer them explicitly, not implicitly.

3. What happens if the tool disappears tomorrow?

In 2024, one major AI platform went down for 72 hours. Companies that had built entire workflows on top of it lost the day. The question is not pessimism — it is risk management. Is the tool part of a workflow, or has it become the workflow itself? If the latter, you are not using the tool — it is using you.

Bottom Line

AI multiplies efficiency when it serves a clear strategy. Adopted without one, it multiplies chaos. The difference between two leaders is three questions.
