CIOE Shenzhen: AI Compute Tightens Optical Supply as 1.6T Modules Ramp

The 27th China International Optoelectronic Exposition, held from September 9 to 11, prominently showcased AI-driven optical interconnects. Exhibitors reported tight supply and capacity shortages, with some orders booked into 2027 as training and inference clusters demand more high-speed links between GPUs, servers, and switches. 800G optical modules remain the main product shipped in 2026, while 1.6T modules are entering mass production and commercial validation. The increase in speeds necessitates new architectural choices like LPO, NPO, and CPO, which balance power, density, and reach for scale-out versus scale-up designs.
