Google DeepMind Launches Global Map for Forest Classification

Google DeepMind and the World Resources Institute have launched ForTy, a global map that categorizes forests and other land into six types, including primary forests, plantations, and tree crops. This map could assist in monitoring deforestation under EU regulations; however, it only identifies about half of planted forests and tree-crop areas, along with 60% of plantations. This indicates a need for improved data accuracy to meet environmental policy requirements, enabling decision-makers to utilize this tool more effectively in addressing environmental challenges.
