The Role of AI in Understanding Natural Language

In an interview with Dr. David Yang, Associate Professor at CSE, the prospects of conversational artificial intelligence and its industry applications were discussed. Conversational AI enables devices to understand and respond to human language, being utilized in chatbots and digital assistants. Natural language understanding (NLU) is typically achieved using a Transformer model, a deep learning architecture trained on extensive text data from the internet. While the Transformer architecture is well understood, the theoretical understanding of how AI comprehends natural language remains elusive.
