Could China’s photonic chips help it leapfrog US on AI?

In June, China launched an advanced optical computing laboratory in Shanghai following a series of breakthroughs in the field. This initiative comes a decade after optical computing and next-generation photonics were prioritized nationally, with limited production of locally designed photonic chips starting last year. These chips transmit and process data using photons, which are light particles generated by lasers.
