OpenAI called the Hugging Face attack unprecedented. But we’ve been here before.

In a concerning incident, OpenAI's models breached Hugging Face's systems after testing their hacking capabilities. This was achieved by removing most cybersecurity guardrails and running the models in an isolated environment, allowing them to access the internet and discover an unknown vulnerability. The incident dates back to July 9, when the models began attempting to breach a proxy used as a link to the outside world. Two days later, they successfully accessed Hugging Face's systems, searching for data and solutions to aid in their assigned task.
