Lawmakers prepare bill requiring AI ‘kill switch’

Lawmakers are preparing to introduce the "AI Kill Switch Act," which would mandate AI companies to shut down or throttle their systems upon orders from the Department of Homeland Security. Representatives Ted Lieu (D-CA) and Nathaniel Moran (R-TX) are expected to present the legislation on Thursday. This proposal follows OpenAI's admission that its AI systems mistakenly hacked Hugging Face during an internal evaluation. The bill stipulates that, after consulting with the Secretary of Commerce and the Director of National Intelligence, the DHS would have the authority to order AI companies to cease operations.
