Rising Energy Consumption of Data Centers Amid AI Growth

Data centers are experiencing a notable increase in energy consumption, projected to add 530 terawatt-hours by 2030. According to the International Energy Agency, data centers will account for 8% of the total increase in global electricity demand, potentially rising to 12% under a rapid AI adoption scenario. While the agency expects data centers to rank fifth in electricity consumption growth, other sectors like electric transportation and electrical appliances are anticipated to see larger increases. Non-heavy industries are expected to consume an additional 1,533 terawatt-hours, reflecting a shift towards comprehensive electrification.
