Google’s Demis Hassabis says it’s time for a global AI watchdog — led by the US

During a panel session at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind, called for the establishment of an AI regulatory body. He argued that the United States is best positioned to lead this initiative due to its economic and technical standing. The proposed organization would resemble existing regulators like the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority and would consist of independent experts and representatives from open-source communities. It would have the authority to evaluate frontier models before their release, enhancing safety in the field.
