EU Investigation into Google's AI-Powered Search Features

The Italian Communications Authority has requested the European Commission to investigate Google's AI-powered search features. This follows a complaint from the Italian Union of Newspaper Publishers, which fears these features may negatively impact news publishers and harm media plurality. The Italian Union of Newspaper Publishers noted that AI-generated search summaries divert users from original sources, threatening the economic sustainability of publishers, particularly smaller outlets. Additionally, the International Internet Union warned of the spread of misinformation resulting from AI.
